The Ability to Perform

I'm ecstatic that you all have joined me in the second installation of the blog. Now, I know you guys are ready to learn more about the event, but it's important that we get to know each other before we move on with further details.

I am a rising senior public relations student who has many different skill sets and abilities. As of now, I have taken an introduction to public relations course and am currently enrolled in  public relations communications. I am well versed in the world of writing and social media. The camera and editing training class I took allowed me to become familiar with broadcasting, and a basic photography class has enhanced my abilities to take a good photo.

I am a member of  Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). PRSSA is made up of more than 10,000 students in over 300 chapters in the United States. Currently,  I am the PR intern at the Innocence Project of Florida, a non-profit law firm that uses DNA to  exonerate those who have been wrongfully convicted. My responsibilities include managing their Facebook page and contributing to  their blog.  I have helped put together and edit their  bi-annual newsletter and currently I am helping the development coordinator plan their annual fundraiser which brings in a bulk of the funding for the organization.

When I express my interest in law to others, I am always met with the question "Well what are you doing in PR?" It is then I must explain that to be a great attorney one must have impeccable writing and speaking skills, which mirrors the field of PR. For now my main goal in life is work for the Innocence Project (New York), the first and largest of all innocence projects in the United States.

I have begun to study for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). With my current g.p.a, I must score above a 170 (out of 180) in order to attend New York University School of Law, which is my first choice. During my time in law school I plan to intern with any public defenders office in New York to learn more about the system. After law school I plan to work for a criminal defense law firm for a couple of years to sharpen my skills and eventually gain employment with Innocence Project. I want to be as prepared as possible when I reach my goal, because I believe that innocent men and women who have been incarcerated deserve the cream of the crop representing them.

Now that you know so much about me, I think it's only fair that you tell me a little about yourself.  What are your dreams and aspirations? If you are living out your dream, feel free to tell me about that too!

  1. I can tell in this blog that Widnie Pierre-Louis is very ambitious and focused on her goals. She knows exactly what she wants and she has planned out exactly how she is going to get there. I like how she mentioned the specialty courses and training she has completed. It shows that she is versatile and ready for the multimedia workforce.

What I find most intriguing about this particular blog post is Widnie's primary goal of representing "innocent" incarcerated people. I find this to be very brave and considerate of her. It is a blessing to have people in the world who actually care about the lives of others who has no relation to them. Proving the innocence of someone who is already found guilty and has done time is a serious challenge. Especially in a country where the number of prisoners equaling to big dollars signs for the government and private corporations. I can only hope for the best for Widnie and I can't wait to hear about her first winning case!

  2. Love the post Widnie. As much as we get on each other’s case, I love your aspiration and how you mold Public Relations and Law together. Almost every day in a courthouse somewhere, someone is being wrongly convicted and has to suffer the consequences. Everyone knows the chant, “the judicial system is (explicit) up,” but nobody wants to step up and take action. It looks like to me soon you’ll be making the change. Good luck.
